Outside "In-House" Counsel

We bring a collaborative, holistic mindset to the practice of law that is intentionally designed to drive transactions forward without pointless friction.  Legal counsel are most impactful when they are viewed as valued team members whose clients involve them early and often.  Any truly effective in-house lawyer understands this dynamic and thoughtfully shapes the attorney/client relationship to eliminate the barriers that prevent a client from seeking legal input.  Obstructionism, endless issue spotting without resolution, non-substantive nitpicking, and fixating on academic issues are all anathema to that kind of relationship, yet so many attorneys engage in this conduct.  We know better.

With over 20 years of in-house experience, John L. Hunt's goal with this firm is to develop and maintain with clients the close, cooperative, facilitative relationships he's cultivated with colleagues in-house, and to leverage those relationships to deliver first-class results.

Principal

John L. Hunt

John is the founder and Principal of HuntLaw PC and a design and construction lawyer with over 25 years of experience.

John started his career as an Assistant Corporation Counsel with the New York City Law Department, where he litigated construction, real estate, and other disputes.  After two years in a private, boutique construction practice, he moved to Forest City Ratner Companies, where he served initially as Associate General Counsel and eventually as a Senior Vice President and Director of Construction Legal Services and Risk Management.  Following Forest City's acquisition by a Brookfield Properties fund, John transitioned to Brookfield as a Senior Vice President and Counsel until he joined OC Construction Management as its General Counsel in 2019, a position in which he served until late 2024.

John has lectured extensively on construction law and insurance, co-authored the chapter on payment and performance bonds in the ABA Forum on the Construction Industry book entitled Construction Insurance, and has represented the Madison Square Park Conservancy pro bono for over a decade.  He earned his B.A. from Binghamton University in 1992 and his J.D. from Boston College Law School in 1995, and is admitted to practice in both New York and Massachusetts.
